Voluntary In Nature (2006)
Voluntary In Nature
10 years later
As a producer and music historian, I don’t feel that everything from the
past is worthy of reappraisal. There are fragments of creation that are
fleeting or simply disposable, more suitable for the dustbin that the crates.
Still, there are other works that linger, sustain or even take on greater
meaning with the passing of time. I’m not going to say under which category
I feel Voluntary In Nature falls, but
10 years later, it is something that
I’d like to revisit and share with any open to listen.
Voluntary In Nature
was created for Tokyo-based clothing brand Sandinista during the first half of
2006 under commission from head designer and friend Vincent Cook. Available as
an exclusive and limited audio stream at sndnst.com in May of that same year, Voluntary
In Nature was comprised of original edits, sound collage, and voice. Some
of the segments date back to the early 2000s and appear in different forms in other
places. Without giving away too much information, Voluntary In Nature fulfills Canadian content regulations fully and
completely, an intentional direction.
Looking back, Voluntary
In Nature represents an era of great self-discovery: Digging, reaching,
thinking, celebrating, meditating, and always learning. It was the conceptual
precursor to 2007’s Sipreano with Decaf and The Stunt Man (1777rex) and the genesis of my blog and outlet for sharing.
Note: I would like to acknowledge the engineering skills of The
Stunt Man, vocal inspiration from the Psychic Ills, and the Trans Continental
Pop Festival (1970).
More to come…
More to come…
PEACE,
Sipreano

THE SANDINISTAS
i've worked w/ tokyo-based clothing company sandinista/2step for over 10 years now, creating a handful of japan-only mix CDs, world-wide blends for the net, and general music consulting on a variety of sound/image related needs (in collaboration w/ graphic designer and sndnst guru, vincent cook)... starting w/ "super reggae & soul" (w/ deejay ryan lee) in the late-90s, the sounds have run the gamut from jamaican music (a formative inspiration for the label in terms of concept/branding), soul, rap, jazz, psychedelic folk/rock, canadian rarities, and original sample-based material to the vinyl 12" singles heard on CITY LIMITS (recorded november 7 at voluntary in nature HQ in vancouver). wanna give a BIG shout-out to the stunt man, who helped w/ mastering at his suite sound labs facility (also in vancouver). hope to share more of this lengthy partnership in future posts, but for now... kampai!!!

shomerde interview/mix
well, it took a while, but i finally recorded an original mix for shevan and the toronto-based shomerde posse. hit "that better enemy: sipreano mix/interview" for the link (wink, wink, catch 'er while ya can cause i don't know how long they'll have the file up for...). continuing along in the vein of two previous sets for tokyo's sandinista clothing company ("share the land" and "sweet grass music"), "april 6 mix" is an all-canadian set of vinyl 7"/LP tunes from out of the unknown, into my archives, and back into the ether in the form of a 60-minute live blend. while there's no track-listing, i'd be curious if any heads out there can ID any of the songs? couple obvious ones for seasoned collectors, but lots of off-the-grid material... "untapped MAPL" © if you will. stoked to officially license a couple of these tracks for upcoming reissues on light in the attic records... keep your eyes peeled and ears to the ground folks! peace

super, super, supreme...
"well, i've watched the videos, read the stories, and peeped the flyer, but who the f@ck is supreme la rock anyways and why should i get off my ass to the waldorf this friday (march 4th) for the second history of dance???"
um, i dunno, but if this mix (link below) doesn't get you moving out the door and headed to the dance floor, i'm afraid, we can't help you anymore...
http://supremelarock.blogspot.com/2009/01/blog-post_9602.html
*originally recorded for tokyo-based sandinista clothing in 2004 (w/ OG artwork by legendary graffiti don, virus), rock the discotheque is serious LIVE mix of heavy, heavy disco, boogie, and soul... there was a follow-up (or prequel???) called executive class, but i'll save that tale for another time...
ENJOY!!!
