wicked!!! another magical history of dance is upon us (friday, may 6)... for this jam, i'll be rocking the GIANT cabaret room w/ two old friends, ryan balaski (aka da capo) and christine dale (c*marie). here's a little blurb i drafted up w/ some more info... see you at the waldorf!!!

Da Capo: Da Capo is Ryan Balaski, a tireless advocate of music in Vancouver since the mid-1990’s, first as manager of the now legendary HMV #852 in Coquitlam (best B.C. record store in during the mid-late 1990’s CD boom???) and later of House of Blues and Live Nation concert promotions. Da Capo has helped bring some of your favourite acts to our city and also DJ’d at countless local venues from The Commodore to the dearly departed Ms. T’s. Heavily involved in the music business for over 15 years, Da Capo has amassed a deep collection of vinyl records to get any party started right.

C*Marie: C*Marie is a rare breed. A dancer and music lover with a carefully selected record collection, the lady also known as Christine Dale has played vinyl in Vancouver for over 10 years. five element ninjas (1982)

growing up in north york, ontario during the mid-to-late 80's i was lucky to catch imported late-night TV from buffalo, new york on WGRZ-TV, an NBC affiliate. one program that caught my young mind was the cat's pajamas, which often screened fantastical movies from hong kong-based shaw brothers film studios. supplemented by regular trips to the local video store and screening flicks like master killer (aka the 36th chamber of shaolin) (1978), i was hooked for life... at the last waldorf history of dance event, i brought a DVD of five element ninjas (aka super ninjas, chinese super ninja) to screen as visuals while dancing bear and i dropped vinyl tracks. behind the projection scrim was a pile of unused rattan chairs. they definitely added an extra dimension to the trademark sound stage sets favoured by the shaws and prolific director chang cheh. here's a few quick snaps i took from the memorable opening sequence...

what can i say, history of dance #3 at the waldorf hotel (friday, april 1)!!! this edition sees a room switcheroo for the city limits posse. jason lev (truth is light) and house music pioneer farley jackmaster funk are pumping out the jams in the cabaret so dancing bear and myself will get all scholarly in the library. super stoked to try out the klipsch set up and run some ill visuals for the heads... don't miss HOD #3!!!

as for history of dance??? i-n-c-r-e-d-i-b-l-e!!! wanna send a BIG thank you to everyone at the waldorf and all those amazing party people who made it all swing. a little re-cap??? well, it's safe to say jason lev is a true wizard... you rule good sir (and thanks for the 7"s)!!! was kamandi taking little cat naps in between murderous sets??? did the snickers bar ever get eaten??? and last but not least, totally not surprised to see the stunt man saving our day once again... w/ music!!! just bonkers!@#$%?!!!

alright now, here we go. less than a week away from the debut history of dance party at the waldorf. both jason lev and myself are digging deep to bring you the best in sound dimensions. what to expect? well, i'll speak on behalf of my february 4th city limits discotheque DJ partners kamandi and the stunt man when i say that we'll be dropping everything from the clash to candido, loose ends to laid back and back again. there will be AM gold, funky reggae, groovy rock, 1960's soul, alternative classics, hard disco, boogie, and pop. and yes, we'll be lugging around crates of OG black vinyl 7"s/12"s/LPs to make this happening happen. no diss to computer DJs, but this is simply how we do... have always done... and will always do...  like the english beat, we "just can't stop it..." call us old-fashioned, but there's no turning back now. while i'm really tiring of incessant hollow promoting, we really need your support here. to turn the tides if you will. to show the the cookie cutter set how it's really done. now i know i'm not the only one who's bored of the lowest common denominator club nights that plague the majority of vancouver's booze and cruise establishments. and it's hella annoying to hear local DJs belly ache about how they don't even play music they like because that's what's expected of them to get paid. well, we're going far beyond that, bucking the trend, bringing back feeling into the mix, and expressing ourselves with love... so needless to say, bring your dancing shoes, good vibrations, and we'll do our humble best to help set your night right. ok, ok...

ok, here you go...
this is the jam! i can safely say that there's nothing like it in vancouver right now. for me, it's simply a celebration of music and love of the dance. i'm riding the rock and pop tunes right out, the way they were intended to be listened to (*note: fleetwood mac, the rolling stones, etc... do not need any extra "beats" thrown on top of it... they're perfect as is!)... i like my 1960's-1970's music raw and my disco hard (and soft too)... but yes, we will boogie... to OGs on wax! w/ friends, family, and lovers. boss sounds from london to tokyo, new york to brazil, jamaica to toronto (and back again). if you wanna know the roots, peep this... if you trust your local DJ, peep this... if you like to get lifted, peep this...
