wow!!! was driving east down hastings this morning and very stoked to see a sign outside pat's pub advertising a henry young gig (sunday, march 17, 1-4 pm). what!@#$%??? i first heard of the vancouver-based guitarist through a rare CBC broadcast LP from the mid-1970s, but young's career dates back to the 1960s where he worked both locally and internationally w/ artists ranging from nina simone to ray charles. really look fwd to hearing him play LIVE!

VivaVinilo D.F.

VivaVinilo DF is a sonic gathering of musicians - researchers - selectors and djs who had dug deep into the roots of recording music made in the americas in the specific form of seven inch 45 rpm records. VivaVinilo DF is taking place for the first time in the heart of México City this saturday march 16th and 17th, inside a neo gothic church from late ninetieth century.

In this first edition we will pay tribute to the great Lalo Duarte, a survivor of the sixties local underground music scene who was heavy censored after the Avandaro Festival, the mexican Woodstock, happened in september, 1971. His songs were censored by the goverment and he had to quit the music scene since then. he was also the first one who did Jamaican toasting style here, with his much celebrated version of Dave and Ansell Collins "Double Barrel"

After Lalo´s homage we will have all-45´s sets by local host Tropicaza, Carlos Reinoso from Chile (La noche de los discos vivientes), Colombian head of Frente Cumbiero and OndaTrópica´s Mario Galeano, marvellous Brittish all-around gentleman Will Holland aka Quantic, Keith Scott all the way from Kingston, spinning his unique acetates he cutted during his time as the soundman behind ska & rocksteady classic labels Merritone and Federal,  and last but not least straight from Japan the great Tommy Far-East, from Rock-a-Shacka records fame, top jamaican music dj and collector.

This will happen on March 16th on Museo Britanico-Americano de México. Next day, same place  we will have a talk with al the djs involved about their work and the importance of music archaeology.

"There are no characters left in the music business. When we first started going there was a healthy percentage of people, and we were all dirt-kickers from council estates, and we all couldn’t believe our luck that we were at the Brits. You go in now and everybody is a careerist. It’s very corporate, and you know what I’ve actually seen people doing at the Brits? Eating. I saw the drummer from Muse smoking an electronic cigarette. A cigarette with a battery in. I had to say to him: ‘Really? Really? Is that where you are at? Do me a favour mate, either have a proper one outside, or don’t have one.’ It lit up green when he had a drag of it. Nonsense. He said that immortal line – ‘Oh you know how it is mate’. And I said ‘I’m sorry mate, I actually don’t.’

Gallagher continued his outspoken views on the ceremony, calling the night "instantly forgettable" and rallying against young people who wear hats. "It was an instantly forgettable night," said Gallagher. "There was nothing going on at the Brits, there was nothing going on at the aftershow parties. There seemed to be a lot of young people in hats, with iPhones. They’re either all involved in some massive video game that they’re all hooked up to, or they’re just texting each other saying ‘Where are you, what are you doing?’ And they’ve all got hats. Where did the hat come from? We’re going back to some Dickensian nightmare. I don’t understand it. People with hats and Blackberrys under the age of 30 should be shot. Or stoned to death."
